Workshop #4: UPWEARS at AMN12

SAVE THE DATE

UPWEARS Workshop on Recycling and Additive Manufacturing for Sustainable and Circular Economy

February 9, 2027, AMN12 conference, Auckland (NZ)

How can textile waste be transformed into high-value functional materials? And how can additive manufacturing support the transition towards a circular and sustainable textile industry?

On 9th February 2027, the UPWEARS project will host its 4th Workshop in Auckland, New Zealand, as part of the 12th International Conference on Advanced Materials & Nanotechnology (AMN12).

This full-day mini-symposium will explore key advances in recycling strategies for bio-based and textile materials, as well as additive manufacturing approaches for circular material systems. The workshop will highlight how bio-based and recyclable feedstocks can be reprocessed into innovative materials for applications such as wearables, smart textiles and sensing systems.

Bringing together researchers, industry representatives and international experts, the event will foster discussions on scalable pathways from waste streams to advanced applications.

Morning session | Material recycling, reprocessing and circular design

The morning session will focus on the upstream stages of circular material development, addressing challenges and opportunities in recycling and material quality.

The topics during this session will include:

  • Recycling of bio-based textiles and polymers
  • From textile waste to functional feedstocks
  • Characterisation and quality of recycled fibres
  • Challenges of recyclability in textiles

Afternoon session | Additive manufacturing for circular and sustainable materials

The afternoon session will explore how additive manufacturing can enable new design strategies and support circularity in material systems.

The topics during this session will include:

  • Design for additive manufacturing and circularity
  • Processing-structure-performance relationships
  • Additive manufacturing vs conventional manufacturing
  • Process physics and defect formation
  • Materials characterisation and qualification
  • Simulation, modelling and digital workflows
  • Sustainability and lifecycle considerations
  • Barriers to industrial adoption and future directions

An evening poster session will complement the scientific programme, offering additional opportunities for exchange, discussion and networking within the international AMN12 community.

Speakers

The workshop will feature leading experts in the field, including Gilda Santos (CITEVE, Portugal) and Mohammad Rouhi (RISE, Sweden) and others to be confirmed soon.
